Aegiali Beach

Aegiali Beach in Amorgos has the shape of a large horseshoe with all shades of blue, fine white sand, and a crystal-clear sea. Behind the beach are bars, taverns, and cafés, where you can enjoy coffee and lunch. The beach is near the beautiful marina of Aegiali.

Agios Pavlos

The beach of Agios Pavlos is located between Chora and Aegiali, respectively ten km and five km distance, and is covered by bus. From Aegiali follow the signs to Chora. After about five km,there are signs to the beach on the right. White pebble beach with crystal clear waters with a strip of sand stretching to the island of Nikouria, which is across the sea.
Nikouria's Beaches
Blue-green waters are waiting for you to explore—just ten minutes by
boat from the beach of Agios Pavlos. Nikouria is an uninhabited island
with three beaches, one of them organized.

Levrosos Beach

Another beach with sand and small pebbles is located near Aegiali. Follow the signs on the road directing you to Tholaria, and before the village, turn left, where it’s indicated by the signs. The road after the junction leads on a small parking lot. From the small square, a path begins (about one minute), leading to the bay below. There are tamarisks on the beach that offer shade. There’s also a taverna and a beach bar.

Agia Anna Beach

On the other side of the island, three km from Chora, is the famous beach of Agia Anna. You can go down a path on the left side of the site’s parking area. On the right side of the road, you reach a path that leads to another, much smaller beach, also called Agia Anna. Two large rocks characterize this beach with its clear waters.

Maltezi Beach Katapola

It’s a beautiful beach with transparent waters that you can reach on foot or by boat from the pier of Katapola. The boats leave every thirty minutes during the day (during the high season). Tickets are sold inside the boat. Hiking enthusiasts can get there on the Maltezi Beach through a path that crosses the beach, through the village of
Xylokeratidi (about forty minutes on foot). The beach has umbrellas and sunbeds for rent. There’s also a bar.

Mouros Beach

Mouros Beach is located about 15 kilometers from Chora. On this little pebbled beach you will find crystal clear waters after you walk about 400 meters downhill from the parking lot.

Paradisia Beach

It’s twenty km from Chora. After passing the junction of the beach of Kalotaritissa, after the village of Kolofana, the road ends at the church of Agia Paraskevi, about 500 meters, it ends up on a small beach with pebbles and stones, a tiny paradise. The distance is covered by and with regular public transport by bus (to the church). On 26 July from the church of Agia Paraskevi, the faithful and pilgrims participatein an important religious celebration that honors the saint. During the feast, a special celebration is offered— Patatato, the traditonal dish for the festivals made with lamb.

Gramvousa Beach

Behind the bay of Kalotaritissa is the small island of Gamvousa, where there’s a lovely sandy beach with pebbles and crystal-clear waters. You can reach the beach from the port of Katapola or the beach of Kalotaritissa using a water taxi.
St. Mary Hozoviotissa (Celebrates 21 November) - Lakki Village Family Beach Hotel - Aegiali - Amorgos

St. Mary Hozoviotissa (Celebrates 21 November)

The most shining jewel and protector of Amorgos. The monastery is dedicated to her grace and built on the steepest rock of Mount Profitis Ilias, 300 meters above the sea, south of Chora.

It was founded in the 9th century and was later extended in the 11th century by Alexios Komnenos. After the liberation from the Ottomans, in 1829, the monastery founded the first Greek school at its own expense. The building has only one external wall since the rock is the inner wall. In its sacristy, there are relics dating back from the 10th century.

As for how the icon of the Virgin Mary came to be on Amorgos, the most popular version, the one that we have been told, is that the icon was found on the island of Amorgos. Told by Abbot Fr. Spyridon that the monks who were expelled from the monastery of Hoziva in Palestine took the icon with them and chose to build a new monastery in this area. That’s where the name of the icon comes from.

According to tradition, the “divine” choice of the spot was made by the Virgin Mary herself, who is said to have taken the pouch with the tools of the master builder and deposited them on the rock, which until then had been called “Diabolotopos” (Devil's place), thus indicating the location where he wished to build the monastery. Today, in a showcase in the church, we can see the chisel (large iron nail) of the master builder that was wedged in the rock for centuries and that which fell from it in 1952.

St. George Valsamitis

On the road between Chora and Kato Meria is a church dedicated to St. George "Valsamitis," formerly an autonomous monastery during the Byzantine times and after became a part of the monastery of Panagia Hozoviotissa. The church has been famous since the Turkish occupation because of the healing properties of the spring from which the holy water flows, even today. The temple's name comes from the wild mint of balsam, a plant that grows in the surrounding area. The old path that connects the area with Katapola begins at this point.

Monastery of Theologos - celebrates 08/05 and 26/09

On the slopes of Mount Krikelos, north-east of Amorgos, on the plateau of Theologos, dominates the homonymous monastery dedicated to the Evangelist John, which according to tradition, as built by a captain as a fulfillment of his vow. The church was probably built in the 7th to 9th century, as revealed by the type of building (a three-aisled basilica with a dome). The building material used for the temple construction is limestone in various sizes and was transported from the captain himself, probably from Milos or nearby Patmos.

St. Anargyroi Tholaria - celebrates 01/07 and 01/11

Built during the Second World War (1938-1940) on the ruins of an older church, which was demolished during the construction of the present church. From the treasures of Agioi Anargyroi, we admire the heirlooms with Byzantine exhibits, icons, valuables, wood carvings, and the carving of the church. Epitaph, the gold-encrusted amphorae, and the antique books and manuscripts.

Fotodotis Christos at Chora - celebrates 06/08

Behind the historical high school in Chora is the Monastery of Hozoviotissa dedicated to Christ the who gives light. The Church is surrounded by a complex of cells and storerooms, masterfully built by an anonymous craftsman. Inside the church, the exquisite and beautifully caged monuments are a source of religious awe, carved wooden altarpieces with historical icons, the sacred icon of the Great High Priest dating back to 1629, and the marble slab with the bicephalous on the floor. The Metochi is also the bishop's seat in Amorgos.

St. Giannis Chrisostomos on the cape (celebrates 13/11).
Panagia Epanoxoriane at Aegiali (celebrates 15/08).
Church of St. Fanourios.
The Shipwreck
The shipwreck became an attraction after the showing of the movie The Big Blue in 1988 because some scenes were shot there. The Cypriot-flagged Olympia was shipwrecked in February 1980, when during heavy seas it tried to find shelter in the bay of Kato Meria. To this day it remains there and creates an eerie atmosphere.

Erato and Nausicaa

The statue, which is located at the entrance to the port of Katapola, depicts one of the nine muses of Omonoia Square in Athens in 1960. In 1966, Georgios Polychronis Amorgianos, from his mother, owner of the Pavlidis Chocolate Factory, had the vision to place a statue at the entrance of the port. He knew important people so he contacted the mayor of Athens who took him to the warehouse to choose a statue.
Polychronis was delighted with the statue of Erato because as he sat it was as if he were gazing at the sea.
The difficulty was in how this heavy statue would be transported and how it would be placed in this difficult spot. The ship that was coming to the island at that time was the “Kanaris,” and at that time the was no pier in the port. In the first attempt, there was a storm and the inhabitants tried to approach the ship with boats, but they did not succeed, and the ship continued its route in the Dodecanese. When, on the way back, he stopped in Amorgos, they succeeded with their plans to place it on the rock where it stands to this day.

The statue of Nausicaa is located on the "cemetery" beach of Katapola. The story of how it was placed at this point is as follows: Dionysus, a man who had various adventures with female tourists, took a boat one night and went to this particular beach. He didn't see the rock and luckily the boat went right past. Dionysus told the story to his employer and the owner of the boat, Georgios Polychronis, who was Amorgian, and its owner, Pavlidis Chocolates. Polychroni liked the story and sent him a statue from the garden of his house in Athens to place it on a specific rock to see if it might fall on him again.

The Lighthouse

The lighthouse is located at the entrance of the port of Katapola in the "Vathi" position of Amorgos. Built in 1882, it’s circular and is one of the oldest lighthouses in the Greek lighthouse network. Today, the ruins of its old tower and the lighthouse remain, while the lighthouse has been replaced with new technology, it is accessed via a path—route No. 10. Katapola-Faros route which takes about one hour. It’s an easy route that starts from the village of Xilokeratidi and passes through the area of Nera which is named after the ancient sources that exist there, crosses the area of Peristeries, and ends in the chapel of Prophet Ilias which is 150m from the lighthouse located at the entrance port of Katapola. Along the route, the walker enjoys a panoramic view of Katapola Bay.
